We took a little trip to Shumen with a couple of our missionaries.
The photos of the ruins of the fortress are historical. The Shumen Fortress was originally built and inhabited by the Thoracians, then the Romans, then the Bulgarians and then the Ottoman Empire (Turks), then the Biszantine Empire then the Bulgarians again. All this between 1200 BC to 1400 AD. Pretty old isn't it?
The Shumen monument is newer. Called the Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria, it is regarded as the only monument in the world to depict the history of a whole country from its creation to the present day. The missionaries think the figures look like Transformers.

About this blog...
As most of you know, Charles and Carol Jewell are on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They received their call in August of 2007 to serve in the Bulgaria Sofia Mission. They set off on their journey from home in San Antonio, TX to the Missionary Training Center (MTC) in Provo, UT before Christmas of 2007 stopping to visit Heather (Midland, TX), Chuck (Amarillo, TX) and Kathi (Broomfield, CO) on the way. Charles and Carol arrived at the MTC on January 7, 2008 and were there training for 11 days before traveling on to Sofia, Bulgaria. This blog is so that all of you can see how they are doing! Hope you enjoy the updates...
